Pay school fees by credit card in Australia

Last updated 20 Oct 2026. Schools set their own payment methods; use your fee statement and the school's current instructions.

Term fees for independent and Catholic schools are often large, one-off or quarterly payments. If your fee statement shows BPAY or the school accepts cards online, you can earn points by paying on your credit card—directly or through a bill payment service.

Earn points on school fees. Schools and child care are among the industries that can qualify for Sniip's lower personal Amex rate. See paying BPAY with Amex and try the points calculator before you pay a service fee.

Fees apply and are shown by the provider before you pay. Card The Bill may receive a referral reward from providers we link to.

How it works

  1. You pay the service by card. A bill payment service such as Sniip charges your credit or debit card.
  2. The service pays the school. It pays by BPAY using the biller code and reference on your fee statement, or by bank transfer when you supply a valid tax invoice with the school's ABN.
  3. The school receives a normal payment. You repay your card on your statement cycle. Keep the confirmation with your fee receipt.

Step by step

  1. Check your fee statement or parent portal. Note BPAY biller code and reference, or whether the school takes Visa, Mastercard or Amex directly.
  2. If the school takes your card for free, paying direct avoids a third-party fee (see Oct 2026 surcharge rules).
  3. If you use Sniip, scan or upload the statement, or enter BPAY details manually. Choose your card; Sniip shows the fee before you confirm. You can schedule term dates or set a recurring payment.
  4. For bank-transfer payments in Sniip, upload a tax invoice or receipt that shows the school's ABN, BSB, account number and amount, as Sniip requires for non-BPAY payments.

Government vs private school fees

Independent and Catholic schools usually invoice term fees and often list BPAY. That is the main use case for this guide.

Government schools may ask for voluntary contributions or charges for camps and subjects; payment methods vary by school and state. There is no single BPAY code for "public school fees" nationwide—follow the instructions from your school.

Timing and due dates

Sniip processes card payments to BPAY billers the next business day when you pay before 5pm AEST on a business day. The school may take extra time to allocate the payment to your child's account, so pay before the due date on the fee statement.

Pay your card in full. Interest on carried balances is usually far more than points earned. If fees are a hardship, talk to the school about a payment plan before putting a large balance on a card.

Frequently asked questions

Can I pay school fees by credit card?

Many independent and Catholic schools list BPAY or card payment on fee statements. If the school takes your card directly without a surcharge, that is usually cheapest. Otherwise a bill payment service such as Sniip can pay BPAY school fees and charge your card for a fee.

Do government public schools charge fees the same way?

Government schools may request voluntary contributions or charges for specific activities, but billing is not the same as private school term fees. Check your school's payment instructions.

Will I get Sniip's 1.29% Amex rate on school fees?

Often yes on a personal Amex. Primary and secondary schools are among Sniip's eligible industries for its lower personal Amex rate. Sniip shows the exact fee before you pay.

Do I need an invoice with an ABN?

For BPAY on a fee statement, you usually only need the biller code and reference. If you pay to the school's BSB and account number through Sniip, its rules require a tax invoice or receipt showing the school's ABN.

Can I set up recurring school fee payments?

Yes. In Sniip you can schedule or repeat payments. Update the amount if fees change each term.
