Can you pay BPAY with a credit card at CommBank, ANZ, NAB or Westpac?
Often yes, but only if the biller accepts credit card BPAY payments. If it doesn't, the payment is declined or, at some banks, treated as a cash advance with fees and interest from day one.
Fees apply and are shown by the provider before you pay. Card The Bill may receive a referral reward from providers we link to.
Why credit card BPAY gets blocked
When a business signs up to take BPAY, it chooses which payment methods it accepts. Westpac's guide for billers says they can choose to accept bank accounts, credit card accounts, or both. Many billers don't accept credit cards, so your bank either won't let you pick your card or treats the payment differently.
Your card's rewards terms decide whether a BPAY payment earns points. Some cards exclude or cap points on government and tax payments.

CommBank
In NetBank or the CommBank app, go to Transfers & BPAY and choose your credit card as the From account. CommBank says some billers don't accept BPAY payments made from a credit card. Its definition of a cash advance includes transfers from your account in NetBank or the app other than through BPAY. A cash advance costs $4 or 3% (up to $300), plus interest from the day it's made.

ANZ
ANZ says a bill payment from an ANZ credit card may be processed as a purchase, depending on how the biller is set up with BPAY: if the biller accepts credit cards, it's a purchase. ANZ's credit card conditions treat paying a bill as a cash advance unless it's through BPAY and the biller accepts a credit card. ANZ says cash advance fees may apply to some billers; its fee is generally 3%. Because the conditions cover paying a bill outside BPAY, ask ANZ how it treats a bill paid through a service like Sniip or pay.com.au before you rely on it.

NAB
NAB's internet banking terms say a BPAY payment can be made from any account if the biller agrees to accept that account, and that when a credit card is used to pay a bill through BPAY, NAB treats it as a credit card purchase. NAB also notes there are no chargeback rights under the BPAY scheme, even on a credit card. Cash advances at NAB cost 3.5% (minimum $3.50).

Westpac
Westpac's credit card terms list paying bills over the counter or through a third party, other than BPAY, as a cash advance. Whether a BPAY biller accepts credit cards is up to the biller. Westpac's cash advance fee is 3.5% of the transaction, with interest from the day it's made. That wording could cover a bill paid through a third-party service such as Sniip or pay.com.au, so check with Westpac before paying that way on a Westpac card.

Frequently asked questions
Why won't my bank let me BPAY a bill from my credit card?
Usually it's the biller's choice. Billers choose which payment methods they accept through BPAY, and many don't accept credit card accounts. CommBank and ANZ both say some billers don't accept credit card BPAY payments.
Is BPAY from a credit card a cash advance?
It depends on the bank and the biller. NAB treats BPAY from a credit card as a purchase. CommBank's cash advance definition excludes BPAY transfers. ANZ treats a bill payment as a cash advance unless it's through BPAY and the biller accepts credit cards. Westpac lists paying bills through a third party, other than BPAY, as a cash advance.
What does a cash advance cost?
As listed by the banks on 6 Oct 2026: CommBank $4 or 3% (up to $300), ANZ generally 3%, NAB 3.5% (minimum $3.50), Westpac 3.5%. Cash advances also charge interest from day one with no interest-free period.
Do I earn points on BPAY from a credit card?
It depends on your card's rewards terms. Some cards exclude or cap points on BPAY, government and tax payments.
What's the alternative?
Pay from your bank account for free, or use a bill payment service. Sniip charges your card as a normal card payment and pays the biller by BPAY: 1.50% on Visa or Mastercard as at 6 Oct 2026. pay.com.au is an option with an ABN.
Can I get a chargeback on a BPAY payment?
NAB says no chargeback rights are available under the BPAY scheme, even when you pay with a credit card. Disputes must be resolved with the biller.
