How to get a BPAY biller code for your business
If you're a sole trader, small business or large business, a BPAY biller code lets customers pay you from their online banking, and lets customers who use Sniip pay your bill with a credit card and earn their points. Here's how to get one, what it costs where fees are published, and how your customers then pay.

What a biller code gives you
BPAY is in the online banking of over 140 banks and financial institutions, and over 95,000 businesses offer it, according to BPAY. You put the BPAY logo, your biller code and the customer's Customer Reference Number (CRN) on your invoice. The customer pays from their bank, or through an app such as Sniip, and the money lands in your nominated business account.
BPAY doesn't sign businesses up directly. You become a biller through a bank or other institution that's a member of the BPAY scheme (it "sponsors" you), or through a payment provider that sets up codes for its customers.
What you need
- An ABN or ACN. CommBank lists this as a requirement. Sole traders with an ABN can apply.
- A business bank account with the bank you apply through. CommBank, for example, asks for a CBA Business Transaction Account and CommBiz online banking.
- Your business details, the name customers will see on their statement (Westpac allows up to 20 characters), the account for payments and fees, and your minimum and maximum payment limits.
- A way to create CRNs and, for ANZ, a sample invoice with the BPAY logo and 5 sample CRNs.
Option 1: through your bank
| Bank | How to apply | Published fees |
|---|---|---|
| CommBank | Need an ABN or ACN, a CBA Business Transaction Account and CommBiz. Talk to your relationship manager or CommBank's BPAY sales team. Payments processed before 6pm AEST reach your account the next business day. | $99 facility establishment, $55 per extra biller code, $0.99 per transaction, $2.20 per partial refund (all incl. GST), per CommBank's Biller Agreement. |
| Westpac | Easy BPAY, a simplified version of BPAY. Request a callback from a merchant specialist, complete the Easy BPAY Biller Agreement and Application Form, then Westpac sends your biller code. Payment limits start at up to $10,000, and you can ask to raise them after 6 months. | Not published on the pages we checked. Westpac's form says credit card payments incur a merchant service fee plus a transaction fee. Ask your bank. |
| NAB | "BPAY Biller in the box": onboarding guide, biller agreement and application form online. No minimum number of payments a month. You choose whether customers can pay from savings and cheque accounts only, or credit cards too. | Set out in Schedule 2 of your biller agreement. Ask your bank. |
| ANZ | Contact your relationship manager or email ANZ's onboarding team (listed in ANZ's guide). Return the signed form, a sample invoice and 5 sample CRNs, then ANZ emails your biller code and activation date. | Not published in the guide we checked. Ask your bank. |
| Other banks and credit unions | Many are BPAY members or are sponsored by one. For example, Cuscal sponsors more than 60 clients into the BPAY scheme. Ask your own bank whether it offers BPAY for billers. | Ask your bank. |
Larger businesses can also ask about BPAY View (bills delivered into customers' online banking) and multiple biller codes for different products.
Option 2: through a payment provider
If you don't want to deal with a bank's biller process, some payment providers issue biller codes or BPAY references for you and match payments to your invoices. These are the ones we could confirm on their own websites:
| Provider | What its own page says |
|---|---|
| Pay Advantage | Works with Xero: invoices with "Pay Now" let customers generate a BPAY reference or pay by card, and payments are posted against the customer automatically. |
| Bill Buddy | Helps you register or move a BPAY biller code, assign CRNs and get reports. |
| redPAY | Sets up your own BPAY biller code and generates a unique reference for each client. |
| Zai | Issues a unique, branded biller code and generates CRNs through its API. Aimed at platforms and larger businesses. |
Fees vary by provider and plan, so check their current pricing before you sign up. We couldn't confirm that Zeller, Square, Stripe or Payble issue BPAY biller codes from their own websites on 10 Oct 2026, so we haven't listed them. Xero itself can send BPAY payments to your suppliers, but that's for paying bills, not receiving them.
How the CRN (reference) works
- Your biller code identifies your business. The CRN identifies the customer or invoice.
- CRNs usually include a check digit, so a mistyped number is rejected before the payment goes through. Westpac uses a "Mod 10 Version 5" routine by default, and ANZ offers a CRN tool or lets you use the customer's mobile number.
- You can give each customer a permanent CRN, or create one per invoice.
- Make a few test payments to your own code before sending invoices, as Westpac suggests, so you can see how payments show up.
How your customers then pay with Sniip
- Your customer opens Sniip and scans the BPAY details on your invoice, or types in your biller code and their CRN.
- They choose a card. Sniip shows the fee before they confirm, for example 1.50% on Visa or Mastercard credit, 0.65% on debit cards, and 1.29% on personal Amex for eligible bill types (fees incl. GST, from Sniip's terms).
- Sniip pays your biller code and the money reaches your account like any other BPAY payment. The customer earns points on their card under their card's terms.
Can't pay yourself: Sniip's terms prohibit payments to yourself, relatives, friends or related businesses. Banks, lenders, and hiring and leasing businesses are also on Sniip's prohibited list.
Frequently asked questions
Can a sole trader get a BPAY biller code?
Yes, in most cases. The banks we checked ask for an ABN (or ACN) and a business account with them. If your bank's process doesn't suit, a payment provider such as Pay Advantage, Bill Buddy or redPAY can set up BPAY for you.
How much does a BPAY biller code cost?
It depends on who sets it up. CommBank publishes a $99 establishment fee and $0.99 per transaction (incl. GST). NAB, Westpac and ANZ set fees in your biller agreement, so ask your bank. Payment providers set their own fees, so check their current pricing before you sign up.
How long does it take?
The banks don't publish a set time. The steps are: talk to your bank, complete the application and agreement, send sample CRNs and an invoice where asked, then get your biller code by email and make a test payment. Ask your bank or provider for a current timeframe.
What is a CRN?
A Customer Reference Number tells you who paid. You give each customer (or each invoice) its own CRN, usually with a check digit so typos are rejected at the time of payment. Your bank or provider gives you a tool or routine to generate them.
Can my customers pay me by credit card through Sniip?
Once you have a biller code, your customers can add your bill in Sniip by scanning or typing your biller code and their CRN, choose a card and pay. Sniip charges the customer a processing fee, for example 1.50% on Visa or Mastercard credit, shown before they confirm. Sniip says it can also pay a BSB and account number when BPAY isn't offered.
Can I pay my own biller code with my own card through Sniip?
No. Sniip's terms list payments to yourself, relatives, friends or related businesses as prohibited. A biller code is for collecting from real customers.
Do Zeller, Square or Stripe give you a BPAY biller code?
We couldn't confirm that from their own websites when we checked on 10 Oct 2026, so we haven't listed them. Zeller and Stripe both connect to Xero for card payments on invoices.
