Pay land tax by credit card in Australia
Land tax is a state tax on certain land you own. It is separate from council rates. If your assessment lists BPAY or another card option, you can put the payment on a credit card—directly with the state or through a bill payment service.
Earn points on land tax. Each payment on your card can earn points under your card's rewards terms. Use our points calculator to estimate whether a service fee is worth it for you.
Fees apply and are shown by the provider before you pay. Card The Bill may receive a referral reward from providers we link to.
How it works
- You pay the service by card. A bill payment service such as Sniip charges your credit or debit card.
- The service pays the state revenue office. It pays by BPAY using the biller code and your reference from the land tax assessment, or by bank transfer if those details are on the notice.
- The state records a normal payment. You repay your card on your usual statement cycle. Allow time before any due date or discount date on the assessment.
Step by step
- Find the payment section on your land tax assessment. Look for BPAY biller code and reference, or online payment instructions from your state.
- Check whether paying direct is free. Since 1 October 2026, businesses (including state agencies) can't add card surcharges on eftpos, Mastercard or Visa. If the state takes your card online at no extra cost and your card earns full points, paying direct is usually cheapest. See what changed in Oct 2026.
- If you use a bill payment service, add the assessment in Sniip (scan, upload or enter BPAY details), choose your card and confirm. The service shows its fee before you pay.
- Keep the receipt with your assessment for your records.
State and territory land tax
Land tax law, thresholds and due dates differ in every state and territory. Always use the payment details on your latest assessment, not a generic code from the web.

Allow time before the due date
BPAY payments through a bill payment service usually take 1 to 3 business days to reach the biller. Pay several business days early, especially if a discount applies on the assessment.
Frequently asked questions
Can I pay land tax by credit card?
Often yes. Each state revenue office sets its own payment methods. Many assessments list BPAY; some portals also take cards directly. A bill payment service such as Sniip can pay BPAY land tax and charge your card if direct card payment is unavailable or earns fewer points on your card.
Is my home exempt from land tax?
Rules differ by state. Owner-occupied principal places of residence are often exempt or treated differently from investment land. Check your assessment and your state revenue office's guidance; this guide is about payment methods, not liability.
Do I need an ABN to pay land tax by card through Sniip?
Not for BPAY bills. Sniip can pay BPAY land tax without an ABN. pay.com.au and B2Bpay are for businesses with an ABN paying property expenses.
Will I get Sniip's lower Amex rate on land tax?
Possibly. Government services can fall under Sniip's eligible industries for its personal Amex rate, but the app shows the exact fee before you pay. The ATO uses the higher business Amex rate; land tax may differ.
How early should I pay land tax?
Allow several business days when paying through a bill payment service. Sniip pays BPAY billers the next business day for card payments before 5pm AEST on a business day, and your state may take extra time to record the payment.
